How to Pair Car Garage Door Opener to Your Garage

Whether you have to connect your new vehicle’s built-in car garage door opener to the garage itself or you have a separate remote that needs to be set up and linked to your door, there’s an easy method to get the job done.

Fortunately, pairing a car’s garage door opener to the garage is a simple task, although it’ll differ depending on the type of garage door opener you have.  Typically, manufacturers try to keep the process the same across the board, so it limits the confusion in the setup process.

Here’s what to look for:

A LiftMaster remote control is made with a “Learn” button.  You’ll press and then release the “Learn” button after you’ve located it on the opener (it is usually a colored button with a LED indicator light).

After 30 seconds of pressing the “Learn button, you’ll then press and hold the button you want to program on the remote for 3 seconds.  Then, release.  You should see the LED light turn off and the garage door operator lights will blink to tell you that you’ve successfully programed the remote.

Other LiftMaster garage openers may require different programming methods.  Often on these openers you’ll find a “Program” button that requires a safety pin or small pointed object to set it, turning on the LED on the front of the control to indicate that it’s ready for programing.  Others will have the “Program” button on the back beneath the visor clip or you’ll need to press certain symbols on the keypad (like the asterisk or number sign) together and the keys will light to signal ready for programming.

Genie garage doors will come with their own openers that are already pre-programmed to their garage door opener.  Any remotes you buy separately can be easily linked.

New remotes will have a protective film.  Pull this film straight out to begin activating and linking your new remote opener to the Genie garage door.  Press and hold the program button for 2 seconds or until the LED indicator light changes and begins flashing.  Press and release the remote’s button twice.  The LED on your new opener will begin to flash in response, letting you know it’s been programmed

Pairing a Vehicle to Your Garage

Alternatively, there are situations where you’ll need to pair a new vehicle’s built-in opener button to your garage door.  This is also an uncomplicated task with a process that’s kept the same with the main garage door opener manufacturers.

Logic boards are used in newer garage door opener models in order to increase security in the programming process.  The logic board is a panel located on the back of your garage door opener.  It sends several signals each time you press your remote-control button. This prevents potential code stealers from snatching your code and using it for themselves to break-in later.

First, you’ll press the “learn” button on the back of your garage door opener.  For LiftMasters, Craftsman, and Chamberlain, the three major garage door opener makers, these buttons are all the same (typically a square “learn” button that’s colored).  Quickly and firmly press the “learn” button—don’t hold it down to prevent erasing all of the programming within the machine.

Next, press the button on your remote control and hold it down briefly.  Your newer car probably has a built-in button located near the driver’s side of the vehicle, usually by the sun visor or front in-car lights.  You might need to recruit an extra pair of hands to help you press this button in the car.  You’ll see the light flash on the buttons or on the machine itself to indicate that the programming was a success.

Now, test to make sure you’ve programmed your car’s garage opener to the garage door by pressing it once more as you normally would to open and close it.
